Kitchen layout guide

When I’m helping someone design their home, my favorite part is the kitchen. Picking the cabinet materials and matching the colors are all very exciting.  Planning the perfect layout involves a lot of details and how the owner of the kitchen will be using the kitchen.

The kitchen is the most used space in a house. Not only is it a place for preparing meals, for many homes, it’s also a place to have their meals together with family and friends. It is an essential part of your day-to-day living.

For many new home-owners, renovating the kitchen is the most exciting. Planning a kitchen involves picking the right equipment and selecting the right colors.  Whatever design you choose for your kitchen, the most important is its functionality and layout.

When you are planning on building a new kitchen, the 'kitchen triangle rule' will be useful. A kitchen triangle is a layout of the main components of a sink, fridge, and stove, which creates a triangle when joined by an imaginary line. Each side of the triangle represents traffic flow within the kitchen's task areas, which are cooking, cleaning and storage. This helps you move around your kitchen easily when preparing meals.

Your cooking area is usually your stove or hotplate with the hood above. Keep your pots and pans in the cabinets around this area. Also, you can have a set of drawers next to your stove for your ladles and cooking spoons.

The sink and dishwasher are usually placed next to each other in a kitchen.  You can also have your waste-disposal bin and waste disposer machine here.

Storage usually includes your fridge and pantry cabinet. Many houses have a separate pantry room to store groceries like canned foods and dry food items.  This helps you organize and keep your kitchen less cluttered.

Identify these three areas and create a triangular layout. Here’s a simple diagram of the kitchen triangle.

This could be a helpful tool, but you don’t always have to follow the kitchen triangle rule. Think out of the box and design a kitchen that works for you.
