25 road trip essentials

Road-tripping' with my two favorite allies
Fully loaded we got snacks and supplies
It's time to leave this town it's time to steal away
Let's go get lost anywhere in the U.S.A.
Does that sound familiar? That’s from the song Road Trippin’ by Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Years ago I went on a solo road trip, which took me 500 kilometers away from home. Just me, my car, and my belongings. I woke up one morning and decided that I want to go somewhere far, far away and see new things. I had just got my driver’s license, and I had a brand new car. So, road trip it was!

I drove from Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar, which is at the Northen border of Malaysia.
I have been on a few road trips since then. I’ve crossed the border and driven to Singapore a few times too. I’ve also been on road trips in India and the U.K.
Of course, a road is on my bucket list too! Kuala Lumpur to Lisbon. That’s what I want to do!
Needless to say, I have a list of road trip essentials written down.
1)    A printed map. You may not have wi-fi everywhere, especially if you are taking roads which are off-the-beaten-track.

2)    Torchlight. With extra batteries.
3)    Drinking water. Lots of it. Refill your water bottles whenever you can along the way.
4)    Snacks like chocolate, candy, energy bars, mints, etc
5)    Wet wipes and hand-sanitizers. My friend once told me that wet wipes were only used to wipe babies butts. No, it isn’t! Get those baby scented ones and use it for yourself.
6)    Travel towels. Lightweight towels are easy to dry.
7)    Small back-pack. To carry around when you are walking around.

8)    Phone chargers and power banks.
9)    First aid kit. Bandages and plasters. Also, carry some medication for diarrhea and hydration salts.
10)    Swiss army knife.
11)    Jumper cable and spare tyres. This is good to have it in your car, road trip or not.
12)    Blankets and travel pillows.
13)    Umbrella, rain-coat, and hats.
14)    Camera. If you are an avid photographer, road trips are perfect to take pictures!

15)    Reusable shopping bags.
16)    A cooler or a thermos, depending on the weather.
17)    Comfortable clothes – of course!
18)    Rubbish bin or bag. You may not find a trash can along those long windy roads!
19)    Collapsible Tupperware. When you buy food at a pit stop, keep them in these containers.
20) A good pair of sunglasses with ultraviolet protection.

21)    Cash. Most of us are credit-card swipers! But there are places where your platinum plastic card will not be accepted.
22) Road trip playlist. You could make a list on Spotify or other music apps.
23) Other useful apps. Hotel app, maps app, traffic app, etc.
24) Driver's license, registration, insurance documents, etc.
25) Your road trip buddy. This should be at the top of the list! Whether it's an all-girl gang or your family, a road trip is where you will be creating memories.

For all you first-time road trippers, I hope this helps! Professional road trippers, you are welcome to give me tips and advice.
Have a safe journey!
